I recently returned from an incredible visit with a dear friend who lives in the foothills of the Alps, in the stunning town of Innsbruck, Tyrol, Austria. I’ve always been drawn to the Alps β and honestly, who wouldn’t be? The endless shades of green, the peaceful meadows, and the bright white glaciers standing proudly above create a landscape that truly feeds your soul. This trip, however, was even more special because, for the very first time, I tried Klettersteig β also known as via ferrata climbing!

π A Summer in the Heart of the Alps
Innsbruck in summer feels absolutely magical. Imagine vibrant green pastures, fragrant meadows, and dense forests contrasting with the crisp white glaciers on the mountaintops. Hiking here isn’t just a pastime; it’s a way of life. My friend lives on the slopes of Patscherkofel, a magnificent mountain that towers over Innsbruck, practically calling you to ascend it. It’s clear that daily hikes are deeply woven into the local culture.
While you can easily take a cable car to the summit (especially popular for skiing and snowboarding in winter), we opted to hike up and truly experience the mountain on foot. That’s how you really connect with the Alps in summer.

π₯Ύ Hiking to Patscher Alm
Our destination was Patscher Alm, a charming traditional alpine hut. Along the way, we stopped at Heiligwasser (“Holy Water”) β a beautiful little spot featuring an alpine-style restaurant beside a tiny church and a spring with an image of the Virgin Mary.
We cooled off with some refreshing homemade elderflower syrup, most likely made from flowers picked right nearby β elderflower grows abundantly all along the trails.
At the Alm, we savored a traditional Tyrolean meal: delicious spinach dumplings, savory sauerkraut, and, of course, a well-earned local beer. The panoramic view over Innsbruck and the surrounding peaks of Patscherkofel was simply breathtaking.

π΅ββοΈ Meeting Fellow Hikers and an Unexpected Challenge
The trail was bustling with hikers and cyclists. I was genuinely amazed by how effortlessly people were riding bikes uphill on such steep terrain. I bike every day back home, but nothing compares to this!
And then, something truly unexpected happened. My friend asked if I wanted to try something called a Klettersteig β the German word for a via ferrata, a climbing route secured with fixed cables and ladders.
I was instantly excited, even though I had never done anything like it before. She did some quick research and found a beginner-friendly route near Mayrhofen, about an hour’s drive from Innsbruck. We picked what was labeled a “children’s route” β but trust me, it didn’t feel childish at all!
π§ββοΈ My First Klettersteig in Mayrhofen
The via ferrata in Mayrhofen turned out to be an unforgettable experience. It was physically demanding but incredibly rewarding. One great aspect is that about halfway through, there’s an exit path if you feel like stopping β but I was determined to keep going.
Every step I took, every time I clipped in my harness, and every jaw-dropping view I saw from the cliffside made me feel more alive. I was completely hooked.
